On Childhood

Remember the golden era of childhood?
Back when kids played outside…
like actual outside, where the Wi-Fi is weak and the injuries are real.

We used to:
• climb trees for no reason
• chase each other like feral cats
• run from imaginary monsters
• and only come home when the streetlights said so

And now?

Children look up from their screens only to ask:
“Is the Wi-Fi down or am I alive?”

Today’s childhood requires:
• Noise-canceling headphones
• Therapy
• And 56GB of RAM

We used to build forts out of sofa cushions.
Kids today build digital mansions with ray-traced lighting and a mortgage calculator mod.

We scraped our knees.
They… update their apps.

We played tag.
They… send AirTags.

But here’s the plot twist:
The problem isn’t the kids.
It’s the adults who scheduled childhood out of existence.

We turned “go play” into:
“Please engage in 45 minutes of structured, sensory-rich, developmentally-appropriate, academically-enriching, parent-approved play.”

Which is just a fancy way of saying:
“Go stress yourself in an educational manner.”

Kids don’t need more lessons.
They need fewer adults hovering like anxious Wi-Fi routers.

Give them:
A stick.
A cardboard box.
A puddle that ruins their shoes.
A friend who might be a bad influence.

No app required.
No certificate awarded.
No productivity gained.

Just childhood.
Raw. Silly. Wild. Real.
